Definition of Community-acquired

  • Onset of infection prior to hospital admission and not within 10 days of hospital discharge

Definition of Hospital-acquired

  • Onset of infection 48 hours or more after hospital admission or
  • Infection present on admission but patient is within 10 days or previous in-patient stay.

Definition of MRSA risk

High risk of MRSA if:

  • Previous MRSA infection / colonisation
  • Inpatient stay for longer than 7 days in the last six months
  • Patient with long term indwelling catheter or central line
  • Admitted from a Nursing Home or residential home with long term breaks in the skin e.g. leg ulcer or pressure sore
  • Current inpatient for >48 hours
