Guidelines for the management of  patients with an absent or dysfunctional spleen: Influenzae vaccine.

  • All asplenic patients should receive a yearly vaccination from their GP.
When?
  • Late September to early November.
  • If splenectomy occurs before the current influenza season has finished (generally September to April) initial immunisation is warranted. Otherwise yearly immunisation and re-immunisation against influenza should be given between late September and early November.

     

 Contraindications?

  • Hypersensitivity to egg or chicken protein.
  • History of Guillan-Barre syndrome.
  • Allergy to gentamicin or polymicin
