Antibiotic Guideline for the Treatment of Endocarditis:

Endocarditis when allergic to penicillins:

++All therapy and investigation should be discussed with Microbiology / Infectious Diseases.++

Staphylococcus aureus

plus one of (depending on sensitivities)

Or

  • Rifampicin PO 300-600mg bd for four weeks* if native valve or 6 weeks if prosthetic heart valve.

*If treating an injecting drug user with right native heart valve infection, a shorter may be sufficient- discuss with Microbiology.

 Staphylococcus epidermidis

Therapy as above but given for six weeks.
