Ceftazidime:

  • A 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotic

  • Bactericidal

  • Resistant to most ß-lactamases

  • Good anti-pseudomonal activity

  • Usual adult dose: 1g tds

  • Dosage adjustment needed if renal impairment

  • Can be given IV or IM; no oral preparation available

  • Penetrates well into bile, bone, heart and synovial, pleural and peritoneal fluids. Only penetrates into CSF in presence of inflammation.

  • Not to be used in patients with a serious penicillin allergy (e.g. anaphylaxis).
