Tobramycin

• An aminoglycoside antibiotic, similar to gentamicin.

• Can be nebulised or injected.

• IV: once daily dosing now recommended. May be given tds if once daily dosing not appropriate.

• Adjust dose in obese patients. 

• Monitor serum levels and adjust dose as necessary.

• As with all aminoglycosides, potentially nephrotoxic and ototoxic.

Main indications:

• Microbiology advice

Active against most strains of:

• Staphylococcus aureus – including MRSA

• Escherichia coli

• Klebsiella and other coliforms

• Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Not active against most strains of:

• Streptococci

• Enterococcus

• Streptococcus pneumoniae

• Haemophilus influenzae
